Cenchreae was the eastern port of Corinth, in the gulf facing towards Athens. The Romans converted a natural place of anchorage in a bay into a safe harbour by constructing two breakwaters out into the sea to the north and to the south of the bay.
This is a view towards the south breakwater, where a number of buildings and warehouses stood.
It was while waiting here before sailing to Syria that Paul had his hair cut as part of a vow. (Acts 18:18).
