This is a storage jar for grain, which would have been buried in the ground inside a house so only the top was showing. It was discovered by Yigael Yadin, previously the Foreign Minister of Israel, who excavated Hazor and Meggido. He said, "I excavated with a spade in one hand and a Bible in the other", following the history of Israel in reverse. Hazor was a city destroyed by fire, with sanctuaries whose sacred objects were smashed and left in their places. These were usually taken as trophies and valuable items by victorious enemies, but left broken by the Israelites in obedience to the law of Moses. Joshua destroyed Hazor, the chief city of the Canaanites, and burned it around 1400 BC.
And Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and smote its king with the sword; for Hazor formerly was the head of all those kingdoms. And they put to the sword all who were in it, utterly destroying them; there was none left that breathed, and he burned Hazor with fire. (Josh 11:10f)
This jar was contemporary with Joshua. We can imagine that a wife would have used it by removing grain for the meal the very day her husband left to fight against Joshua, never to return again.
