A bronze model of Palestine's fertility god, controlling the rain, and the lightning. The god, El was too remote to know and worship. So El's son, Ba'al, was worshipped, here shown as a warrior with horns, lightning in the right hand and a club of thunder in the left.
The prophet Elijah challenged the worship of Baal when he declared, “As the LORD the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” (1 Kg 17:1). The people were left with a choice: Is Baal or Yahweh the true god of the rains? Later, on Mt Carmel, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to demonstrate that Baal was the true God by bringing fire down from heaven (lightning). You will call on the name of your god (Baal) and I will call on the name of the LORD; the god who answers by fire is indeed God (1 Kg 18:24).
